We'll be meeting Tuesday March 1st at 7pm for our Annual Meeting.
The main purpose of this meeting is to elect a new board for this
coming year. The new board will then elect officers at a subsequent
meeting.
We'll also take a look at approaches that have not worked for us in
this last year and what has worked. It has been an exciting year with
the launch of our first anthology. We've sold enough copies to print
our next project, which is a victory that should be celebrated. We are
in a good position to build upon the success we've had with our second
project, Alternate Rochesters.
A third project, a Green Punk project, has been proposed.
We're entering our third year as a not-for-profit corporation, which
allows us now to apply for grants. There are several which we would
qualify for and for which we should apply.
This is a pivotal moment for us a group. Our mission, to promote spec
fic and spec fic writers right here in Rochester, has never been more
important.
However, our membership is one of people that only have time to spend
on R-SPEC once the bills are paid and the kids are cared for. Scant
time and burnout are critical issues for us. Our projects necessarily
move more slowly than a paid staff would move them, which is
frustrating. One approach to burnout that I've seen work in other
settings is to declare a "Sabbath Year" in which no work would be done
unless it gave the person doing the work joy. Another approach, often
the default, is to let the group dissolve for a period of time and
then resurrect it after some rest.
This group is composed of some of the finest thinkers in this area. We
are the people that have proven ability to apply imagination to
reality and we're looking to craft a path for our own group for this
next year. Come on out to the meeting, and put in your thoughts, or
if you can't physically get to the meeting we can connect with you
electronically by video chat or virtual space.

President, R-SPEC, Inc.
