Hi - Wow what an animated discussion. I agree with bits from all of
you.
I love New Zealand racing and Aussie too - I think they are quite
different. The Aussie's generally are more interested in racing than
the average kiwi and their press serves the industry well with good
information and is generally unbiased. I think our press here become
too focused on a good story - if you want proof go back over the last
2 months worth of Friday Flashs or Heralds/Dominions and see how many
of their headline stories were winners. I thank them for their smoke
screens!!!
I love the big summer carnivals - I think we have good lead up races
for our top handicap events and picking a winner isn't too
difficult. What annoys me most is the maiden events held on group
days - I can't stand waiting through endless maiden events for the
group races to run.
What I do think the Aussies do better is the number of quality WFA
events for their class horses. Our horses here run out of handicap
events way too quickly - take Calveen for example - yesterday she ran
1 kg over WFA, after what 5 or is it 6 wins - two were fillies races
at fixed weights - I think she was a little harshly weighted.
So I was especially pleased to watch St Reims race over the classic
WFA distance of 2000 - and what a race it was - there was a plan to
beat him but in the end he was too tough!! For me that's real racing.
BUT THE THING THAT BUGS ME MOST ABOUT RACING IS WET TRACKS
Regards
Trevor
