To all my Racebase friends.
I'm going to disappear from the group for a while.
I'm not giving up . . . just taking a sabbatical. (No, Muz, that doesn't
mean I'm joining a monastery.)
Over the past few years, decades really, I've become more and more selective
with when and how I invest on racing. South Island gallops went when Reon
Murtha was still a reasonable race-caller; harness racing followed suit in
the mid-'90s; most midweek stuff went in the past four or five years. And so
it goes (as the great Kurt Vonnegut would phrase it).
Now that the rain has arrived (and, boy, it arrived here over the weekend)
the prospect of sorting out winter gallopers and then watching them plug
around through ploughed fields fills me with what can only be described as
dread. Of course, it must be ten times worse for the jockeys . . . no wonder
a heap of them are looking for billets in Macau, Mauritius and so on for
June, July and August. And you'd have to be simple-minded to work here as a
stablehand at this time of year.
Anyway, I bought a kite-fishing rig the other day and for the next three or
four months my Thursdays and Fridays will be spent, weather permitting, at
Pakiri Beach, trying to land some 10lb snapper. If I master the art, I'll be
across to the west coast chasing the really big ones.
Good punting everyone . . . I'll be back for the Kelt.
