The only downside I see is it would no longer be possible to post via email.
To whomever volunteers to do the implementation and the requirements analysis: please don't break email.
(To take Rust as an example, their current insistence on strangely anti-open Web forums, Discord, etc. is a barrier to participation for me and people who feel similarly.)
