Hi, Richard. My initial reaction is that the full scope of what you described would be a very ambitious project -- it would take a lot of time and people to do and maintain over time.
Are there existing commercial or open-source software systems to run a small to medium sized law practice? If so, I'd suggest try to find one that's extensible and build on that. That way, you could focus on your first section, "Documents", without needing to build everything else up-front. Depending on how that goes, you could someday/maybe proceed to replace the rest of the system over time.
