Just replying to myself once more incase the information it is helpful to anyone else.
I think it was a result of a bad upgrade from .6.x to .8.x, I've just tested a new instance with similar extensions and it worked straight away (and wish I'd done that before writing a rails app to test that!). I think I'll have to manually migrate the data over, but at least the guts seem to be working.
