I'm one of those who think that a
court ruling overriding a popular vote is just WRONG. "A
government of the judges, by the judges and for the judges." Oh
wait, that's not what it says. David "Free
speech is meant to
protect unpopular speech. Popular speech, by definition,
needs no

United States. More recently, state supreme courts have explicitly held the line against polygamy in their rulings to extend marriage rights to same-sex pairs. See Goodridge v. Department of Public Health (Massachusetts, 2003) and In re Marriage Cases (California, 2008); the latter decision describes both polygamous and incestuous unions as "inimical to the mutually supportive and healthy family relationships promoted by the constitutional right to marry."2008 is an eternity in California jurisprudence. The ruling that struck down Prop 8 basically enshrines a "right to marry" that is so strong it can reverse a constitutional amendment. But Muslims won't win this round; the liberal left will win it for them. There are already lawsuits promoting "multi-partner marriage" (polygamy & polyandry) and "sibling couples" (incest), starting with targeting the Army for denying benefits. Opponents to these will be demonized the same way those who oppose gay marriage are now. I predict both will be legal within the decade. Then Muslims and heretic Mormons will get to go along for the ride... -- Ernie P.
