The Mark Twain quote that Billy posted yesterday says it all... Suppose you
were an idiot and suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat
myself. 

 

I think that many newly elected members of Congress head to DC with
idealism, and okay, they are not generally stupid people.  But as a
non-historian, I am guessing that the cloud over Samuel Clemens' Congress
was any worse than ours.
