The episode with Solomon Kleinsmith from some years ago is gradually emerging from my memory. As I recall, he was very vocal to the effect that we should drop the word "radical" and be centrists, per se, like him. He was evangelical about it, And adamant that there is no such thing as Radical Centrism. He has some kind of "centrist" project he is promoting. OK with me, but his comments about Radical Centrism still irritate me after all this time. There decidedly is something called Radical Centrism and while it comes in a variety of forms what all RC-ists think is true is that centrism as such is not what they are all about and that they are quite radical in their views even if, added up, mostly their values cluster someplace that can be called the center. There is no massive movement into the Radical Centrist camp but there is a steady current in that direction as the following Google entries make clear. The most relevant ancestor of today's Radical Centrism was Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose / Progressive Party of 1912. But the generation of the Founders was, I think, more-or-less Radical Centrist. Think of how Madison worked, consulting all kinds of sources when he drafted the Constitution, unconcerned about whether a good idea came from Left or Right. Hence our Constitution is RC in character, liberal in some respects, conservative in others, and in still others, it is "Other." There is a fundamental difference between "centrism" and Radical Centrism. Neither reduces to the other, each has its own modus operandi, principles, and objectives. Kleinsmith was carrying on as if Radical Centrists are heretics from the True Centrist Church and we should realize the error of our ways and return to the true faith. That view is absurd and represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of RC. At least at the time, clearly, he had done no research into Radical Centrism. Hence his remarks were pretty much irrelevant to the discussion. Radical Centrists are not centrists any more than Democratic Socialists are the same as "socialists" as Marxists use the word. In such cases we are talking about very different political species even though they use some common vocabulary.
