The short version is that people need to believe that they belong, that they are the good guys, and that they will be able to make a better future for themselves and their children.
For people who felt that way in the 20th Century, and no longer feel that in the 21st, Trump was seriously appealing. And the church, sadly, has not been able to articulate anything better.
