Ernie: Sorry for not replying sooner. I'm still not used to how Rackspace does everything.
My inbox label for this e-mail was misleading. The system re-labels everything for the user's convenience; sometimes that is just fine but it would be far better if everything was verbatim because their "tags" don't always make good sense, at least not to me. A book about re-inventing Christianity? That sounds like a very worthwhile project. As in "very worthwhile." Not sure what to say, however. Am I really the best person for this kind of editorial involvement? This would necessarily get into some really serious theological questions and, on that subject, while we agree a lot, we also have some serious differences. That is, what you are asking is something along the lines of a Christian asking a Zoroastrian to review and comment on a book about Christian faith. OK, maybe the "spread" isn't that great, it certainly isn't about X number of questions, but about "Y" issues I think it is. I am flattered by your request. Maybe a better word starts with "h" and includes consonants like "m" and "b." a word I seldom use, hint, hint. Given the''spread" as it exists, not much at all in some areas but major in others, what do you suggest? I'm kind of at a loss. I once helped Barry get started as a writer; spent a lot of time, in fact, with all kinds of things having to do with writing as such. And now -behold- he is going to be published in a couple of anthologies in a few months, maybe a year for one of the volumes, and he writes regularly for a newspaper in a town on the Oregon coast. You can bet that I feel really good about his progress. So, yes, I'm open to some kind of helpfulness, I just don't know what, exactly, would make the best sense. Suggestions? I would like to write a book on reinventing Christianity. It would benefit enormously by having someone of your stature review, edit, and endorse it. But I am terrified of sharing it with you, because all my previous projects you have mocked as hopelessly impractical, and condescendingly told me all the reasons why they can never work. So what kind of recognition are you really offering me?
