Ernie:

Actually a quite good paper about AI and human intelligence as it relates to AI.

Lots to think about and learn about.

However....

You knew this was coming....

There is a problem. Namely: The author has Left-wing biases that are seen by
her

as natural, unarguable, and anyone who thinks differently is necessarily
perverse.

That is, you need to buy-in to Left-wing philosophy or there is no place for you

in any discussions of the future.

Case in point is spanking of a young child as a means of communicating
displeasure

and training the child to behave better. That is, plain and simple moderate
spanking,

not brutalizing a child, not using objects to inflict pain, none of that, simply

spanking with an open palm. And, needless to say, no more spanking beyond.

a certain age, generally 4 or 5.

I think there are persuasive neurological reasons for this practice as well as
lessons

from the school of Hard Knox, that unless this is done the child is likely to
become

insufferable, willing and able to bully his or her parents to get his or her
way, repeatedly.

Viz., tantrum threats.

Not according to our author, the only way to think about the issue is the
approved

Left-wing way, no spanking under any circumstances, ever, case closed.

There is no reference to empirical data and no possibility for debate on the
matter,

it is an article of faith.

This attitude, that the political Left has solved all (or no worse than most)
such issues,
underlies the whole paper.

To repeat, the paper is very good by-and-large. Its just that the author's
unexamined biases
cloud her "findings" and make me think that, if I was to go further, that is
is essential
to question everything she has said.

Subject: [RC] Call for a rational society

Sorry, only in pdf for now. The clever twist is using AI as an excuse to plead
for what we used to call reality-based politics: making decisions based on
clear objectives and measurable data.

It is sad that this is still considered a radical fringe idea...

Sandy Pentland was a co-author, so it caught my eye. This paper discusses the
possibility of applying the key principles and tools of current artificial
intelligence (AI) to design future human systems in ways that could make them
more efficient, fair, responsive, and inclusive
