Hi Folks,

Though it might not seem like it, summer thunderstorm season is almost here
and you have the opportunity to become a NWS-trained Skywarn Spotter;
please see the email below.

The training at Nassau County OEM in Bethpage is open to the public and a
number of amateur radio operators from NYC have attended in the past. (It's
a short cab ride from the Hicksville or Bethpage LIRR train stations.)

Kind regards,

Norm Sutaria

Subject: SKYWARN: Severe Weather Awareness Week and an Upcoming Spotter
Class
To:

All,

I hope this email finds everyone enjoying our first nice Spring weather.
Please keep in mind that as we transition from winter to summer, we do
move into our thunderstorm season, and towards the hurricane season. In
fact, I believe I heard two claps of thunder yesterday evening to remind me
to get this email out!

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week. The NOAA's National Day of
Action is April 30, 2014. Please have a look at
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/com/weatherreadynation/ for more information. It
is a great time to review weather safety and preparedness for you and your
family.

If you do not have your Skywarn Spotter certification, or if you have an
older ID number, pre-2012, here is our chance to get certified or
re-certified. On May 31, 2014 from 9:00AM to 1:00PM, I will be teaching
the Basic Spotter class at Nassau County OEM located at 510 Grumman Road
West, Bethpage. This class is sponsored by Nassau County OEM/CERT and it
is open to the public. It is requested that you register in advance by
sending an email to [email protected] and place "Skywarn Class" in
the subject.

The American Red Cross will be holding a Training Marathon for the public
and for volunteers the weekend of June 6th. There will be a Skywarn class
held as one of the sessions. This will be a Skywarn class with an emphasis
on weather awareness for the volunteer for both pre and post event response
planning. More information regarding this event will be forthcoming.

On behalf of my Deputy Coordinator Larry and everyone at the NWS Office in
Upton, thank you again for your continued support.

Thanks,
Bruce
