In other ham-related news, Max and I helped out with our first ARES event
on Saturday, organised by the ever helpful Josh (K2FTC) as race marshals
for the NAMI walk downtown. I recommend this sort of thing to any hams, new
or latent, and coincidentally there are several upcoming events that could
use volunteers for this type of thing.

It was fun, and we learned quite a bit. Other than that we should pack
sunscreen, we also learned that it was tough for everyone on the circuit to
hit a single local repeater at the same time. We ended up using the backup
simplex frequency, but that might not work for a larger route, as the walk
was only 5K across the Brooklyn Bridge and back.

Hack Manhattan could definitely help technically by building a mobile
repeater tailored for the 'concrete canyons', which would also be useful in
case of emergencies downtown. A further suggestion was that we could also
work on building autonomous drones that would flash messages to
runners/walkers on the route, and perhaps give directions where that would
be useful.
