Try pausing or stopping any music -- instead of using the power/standby
button.

I noticed that when you use the pause/stop button to stop music, the
clock display (assuming that is your screensaver in this situation) dims
after about 10 or 20 seconds.  

However, if you simply use the standby/power off button, the clock dims
no further then what you see as soon as the screensaver appears -- why,
I don't know.  But that's how it works.  

All of the above assume manual brightness settings.
