Well I think that is a personal decision that each person has to make,
not a one-size-fits-all answer. Personally I am prepared to do a little
bit more work trying to work out the 'issues', or find other solutions
(such as a low-power NAS or PC) which will lower my energy usage, while
still allowing me to enjoy things like SqueezeBox and my computer. I
suspect your figure of $10-20 per year savings is on the low side, but
it depends on where you live and the rates you pay of course.

I also find your argument about wear-and-tear on the parts from
sleeping/shutting down a PC regularly to be questionable - I've been
putting my PCs into sleep or shutting them down completely when not in
use for years and have yet to encounter any irregular rate of failure
and have never heard any evidence of this from elsewhere either.
