Maybe that's just it. It's a compromise, where a product as specific as an alarm-radio really needs to implement such a basic function very simply - and leave support all the other use-cases through options or 3rd party apps. Provided they're awake, sober, have found their glasses etc... I can't think of an alarm-radio I've needed a manual for and they manage without menus.
