That's why I was asking - to sort fact from supposition.

The reason I'm interested in this in particular is I'm building my own
pack and on my first test I was monitoring the temperature.

The temperature rose fairly slowly - after a couple of hours the
temperature started to climb more rapidly (as expected for a charged
battery) and I was hoping that charging would then stop.

However, it reached 40 degrees C but which I don't beleive is too high
for a NiMH cell but i didn't have any more time to monitor the
temperature so I unplugged.

I haven't had any spare time since to check my wiring, the voltages at
the taps etc. Hopefully I'll have some more time soon.

I suppose it is possible that different capacities of cells have
different thermal responses when charging. My cells are 2600mAh.
