Easiest would be to buy a Squeezebox-Touch. 
Then you a have robust server and alarms should be very robust too. Of
course it doesn't make sense, just to buy a Touch for alarms (so don't
tell your wife) ;), but maybe you have a local mp3-library and need a
SqueezeBox-Server anyway ?
Then give your daughter the Touch and wife gets the Radio from
daughter. 
Or get yourself a Touch for the living room :D

Another way is to build some other sort of local Squeezebox-Server.
Personally I'm running a SheevaPlug (you'll find pretty good
explanations in this forum on how to install SqueezeboxServer on it).
This solution is a bit cheaper if you don't need all the Touch
functionality. 

I don't have any experience with just using MySqueezebox.com.
