This little device called SheevaPlug mentioned somewhere else in this forum (which has got very good support by the community here) doesn't have any noise (no fans), doesn't consume much energy (3W on idle) and has the best WAF I know of (its a plug, its sort of invisible - what could have a better woman acceptance factor than invisible stuff?).
In the meantime my wifes even enjoys listening to Squeezeboxes (she of course (!) complained a lot about the Logi-Stuff I bought). THAT's what I call WAF. I converted this plug also to being my new printserver - so I'm even saving energy because I don't have to turn on the 'big' computer just to print. It also acts as my NAS - and again I don't have to turn on my big computer if I need access to some files from my laptop. And I even safed money compared to other solutions. So yes - maybe you didn't want to spend 150$ more (SheevaPlug + HD). I agree. But money is the only reason I accept for not having a 24x7 server that could suit your needs in so many other good ways. It might even take you one more weekend to set up. But than again - your life will be at least a year longer if you just do it and stop pushing your anger about logitech. Life's just not worth it. And logitech for sure doesn't deserve shortening your life. We get ripped off by big companies and their adverts all the time. But at least with the Logi-devices I was able to help myself. All this of course shouldn't prevent you from giving bad amazon reviews, write letters to review magazines and all that. Take your anger and use the channels that matters to higher management ! But I think this forum is the least place where you should place your complaints in my opinion. Here we talk about workarounds and try to help to make the best of what we bought. Here we are happy that people like erland put their life into giving us all the stuff logitech isn't capable of (hope they as well push his donate button regularly). And for alarms: I think hoping that it will ever work with MySB.com is too much. Apparently with their current architecture (communicating with mysb.com at alarm time) all their sold devices run a coordinated DenialOfService-Attack against their own servers. Each day. Sure you can wait for the big rearchitecture to come - but don't think that it will be in less than six month (if they dare to do it at all). -- bluegaspode 1x SB-Controller+Receiver (Duet), 1xSB-Boom. 1xSB-Radio Server (7.4.1) running on SheevaPlug (Ubuntu) with attached Western Digital MyBook Essential.
