I would agree that this sounds like a bad unit. Before you exchange your unit ... were you able to update the firmware on the bad one? If so, what version of Squeezebox Server and firmware are you running? Can you update your software and firmware as one last check? Updating with either wired or wireless network would be OK.
Sometimes (but not always) updating the firmware to the latest helps.
