I'm just asking to try to get a feeling if your problems are related to the software on the Logitech central server (mysqueezebox.com) or you have seen bugs in the firmware or the Squeezebox Server software which haven't been registered as bugs yet. To increase the possibility of getting a working device when you bring it back from the attic, make sure there are bugs registered for your problems at http://bugs.slimdevices.com and vote for them so Logitech knows there are more people with the same problem. However, from what you describe, it sounds like your problem might be caused by something in your setup. Maybe network disturbances or something similar. To find and solve these, you should contact the Logitech support unless you have already done so.
