It could be just plain and simple router overload. My cheapo Belkin got converted to an AP-only (ie, i don't use the 'wan' port and turned off DHCP) because under load it would do strange things. Too much streaming, too many hits to a port-forwarded web server and it would fill up its nat tables or some other memory and start dropping packets.
