No need to panic, folks. Although the "home" button would seem to be the obvious candidate, pressing the "back" button seems to do what I want, i.e. continue playing and display the track info.
Sure, I always try pressing every button, in fact, every combination of buttons, on new hardware, secure in the knowledge that no matter what I do I couldn't possibly brick it.
