The biggest risk I suspect with NiMH rather than LiON batteries is
their leaking and causing corrosion. They could also overheat when
charging but it would have to be quite extreme to do damage. There is
always a tiny risk of explosion but NiMH are much much more stable than
laptop batteries.

I would say though that the overall risk is low but crap batteries are
generally crap they don't hold charge long and don't last many charge
cycles. You may well be replacing them sooner than you thought.
