I've from time to time had similar problems with the fallback alarm and
in my case it has always been caused by a short temporary network
problem.
I believe the current fallback mechanism is triggered as soon as the
network is lost, even if it's only lost 1 millisecond and wouldn't
cause any music disturbances. The reason for this is that the alarm
functionality is currently focused at waking you up and not primarily
at making the listening enjoyable after you are awake.
The only way to get the listening after you are awake reliable at the
moment is to have a reliable local Squeezebox Server and a reliable
network connection. The Wifi connection in my Radio isn't as good as
the Wifi on the laptop, I've had scenarios when the laptop had no
problem communicating over Wifi but the Radio didn't work at all when
positioned at the same place. My setup improved when I changed the Wifi
channel setting in the router, probably because the disturbances from
neighbors were less on certain channels.
