Its a filter that is built into the audio codec chip.

Logitech(?) thoughtfully provided access to the chip's control functions
through its Linux driver. Or, at least, some of them.

I have no great knowledge of these things, but they typically offer
themselves as 'solutions' for low power audio devices, and have a number
of built-in processing paths for inputs and outputs, volume control,
equalization & sound effects, etc.

The Radio seems to use one channel of the chip to drive the bigger
speaker and the other channel to drive the smaller speaker. Use of
headphones would, I think, switch back to a 'regular' stereo
configuration.
