Personnaly, I think it is a marketing error not providing an upgrade path for oldier devices, at least for recent one like the Touch, since it will prevent legacy users to migrate to UE and eventually buy new UE devices to expand their multi-room coverage. If all the marketing arguments for UE you've mentioned would become true, I'd certainly be willing to upgrade my Touch to UE.
