Ok, playing with this some more, this only happens after I've connected it to my home network (Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.3 - 133662643 @ Thu May 10 02:05:18 PDT 2012).
When I've first connected it to the internet and it's talking to mysqueezebox.com, the volume knob works. But when I connect it to my home network and Logitech Media Server, the volume knob stops working, volume is at 100%, and I can't change the volume through any interface (web, SB controller, remote, etc.). And it also doesn't give mysqueezebox.com as a server I can connect to from the SB Radio menu, either (even though I was just connected to it).
