software restored to factory software.  I think that can either be done

These are all called manufacturer refurbished.  

I wouldn't hesitate to take a chance, as long as you carefully check the
seller's return policy (including return shipping charge policy),
restocking fees, or any other return-related fees.  Or you could do what
I did - buy a UE Smart Radio brand new from Crutchfield for $99 (free
shipping), and convert the software to Squeezebox software - it's a
Logitech menu item now.  Simple conversion, and radio works flawlessly. 
Best of all it's brand new.  Amazon also has that $99 deal going too.  

But whatever you do, have fun with it.
