I have a temporary fix, which is to connect the radio by ethernet to an
Airport Express extending the wireless network to which the radio won't
connect on its own. It's not very elegant and my wife is certainly not
happy about the wall wart and ethernet cable now intruding in the
kitchen.

Since the network itself is fine, and since my other WiFi-connected
players are fine, I really do believe the problem is in the radio
itself. I am less convinced that it is a hardware problem since the
breakdown happened at the same time as some kind of network "event" that
has since been resolved. But numerous radio resets, connections to MSB,
LMS restarts have not made a dent.

Are there any persistent settings in LMS (for example, in the cache
folder) that could account for this? Is there some arcane thing that I
am missing? Is there a log I can collect that would shed light?
