Logitech won't be doing this? (I doubt it)? It also cannot be done through a LUA applet? Is that the case? So the only way to do this is through a firmware upgrade and only Logitech are able to do that.....
I think running LMS with a plugin is your best bet. It is much simpler than trying to build a new firmware. There are more dependencies in the firmware than you would imagine, or even less fight with.
