The real advantage of the Squeezebox is in disrtibuted, multi-player
environment.
Since it is an internet streaming device, you ALWAYS need some form of
device in the area (as a minimum, a router to get access to some form of
network).
mysqueezebox.com was intended as the "server-less server" where you can
get several services without running your own server. At one time there
was a way to do some form of "cloud" serving of your own music, but that
service didn't last, and mysqueezebox.com will go away at some point as
Logitech is no longer producing the products.
HOWEVER, a light local server can give you a lot of advantages. Again,
it really shines when you have multiple squeezebox devices - you can
listen to multiple streams in different locations, or you can
synchronize multiple players to a single stream. You also have the
advantages of the various plugins/applets which provide additional
capabilities.
As for the transportable device, in the configuration described above,
it is AWESOME to be able to drag a radio around the house or yard,
operating on battery, providing all the access to my services (local
music, streamed radio and services, etc).

If you "just" want to be able to stream from an android phone, maybe a
bluetooth powered speaker?
