After reading through this thread and unsuccessfully trying several of the proposed solutions I had another idea last week. On my new modem (which seemed to be the source of the issue) I enabled the yet unused guest network just for my Squeezebox and just on the 2.4GHz band. Since then everything runs smoothly. I guess an alternative would have been to use different network names for the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz band, but I never tried.
