Thank you for this, definitely helps - yes indeed, three floors and
masonry walls have proved to be a pain when it comes to wireless. I
would like to locate the router in a better location but due to where
the phone line (and so internet connection) comes in and also because
this is where the two wired connections go from it is not easy to change
this (would if I could!).

Yes indeed, this was my plan initially. My old N56U is not AiMesh
compatible but my AC68U should be - although as mentioned there are
issues with the AC68U in mesh mode and I've read opinion that I trust on
SNB that it isn't advised to use the AC68U in AiMesh due to its age. The
AC86U I bought but have never used *-should-* work fine, but then I'm
reluctant to use it in an essential role as I believe it is prone to
crapping out. It might not, but it also might....

Really interesting to read this thread, hadn't seen it before - once
again the experience you had with Asus support makes me mad that they
can sell a product as having backward compatilbility with a/b/g/n yet be
unable to help when there are myriad examples of problems with 2.4GHz
devices. Such a shame - some might say it should be expected that 12
year old hardware has issues with the latest and greatest wifi
broadcasters, but in that case don't advertise backwards
compatibility!?!

Your final line of post #1 gives me hope though:

Have said before but it is a shame that the ZenWifi range doesn't play
nicely with older wireless devices, as they are a great solution
otherwise from what I can tell - a lot of horror stories from early
adopters but the platform looks to have matured well. It always bugs me
not knowing why things are so I would very much like to know the reason
for the difference in ZenWifi vs ACxxX routers when it comes to legacy
support. But I'm not sure if I will find this information!

Overall I am wondering whether the matter will be taken out of our hands
as SB owners due to neighbours upgrading to wifi6 by default as time
goes by. It would be great to have some kind of replacement lined up but
I just don't see it currently. Maybe I'll end up trying the aluminium
foil method :)

In the meantime it really feels like I will by buying an AX86U and
seeing how it goes, maybe getting an XD4 node for downstairs if there is
still a gap in coverage, although bearing in mind the fact that the XD4
might not work with the kitchen SB radio....
