Yeah, the only way to make the layout work would be to temporarily (?) split 
and duplicate the key cell so that it no longer spans two rows, then insert the 
preview row immediately beneath the row that the user clicked on. But that 
would break the visual link between the old and new values for that key. I 
don’t think getting this feature to work on the history page should be a 
blocker, since the preview is only a convenience and one that hasn’t been 
around for very long. The user can still access all the same information on 
Wikidata by clicking on the QID. We can ticket out restoring the feature to 
this page.
