Another strong reason to move the donation link out of the attribution string
is that we don’t show the link at all if the user is looking at a
non-OSM-hosted layer such as CyclOSM or MapTiler OMT. The user could arrive at
the site from a link that specifies one of these layers, then the site
remembers that setting, preventing the user from seeing the donation link
unless they actively seek out another layer. I understand the choice to avoid
plugging OSMF donations as part of attributing a third party, but the user
would perceive value in OSM even when viewing one of these layers.

@gravitystorm expressed a valid concern in

about adding any item to the navigation bar that takes the user away from the
main website. The user would lose the consistent site navigation and might not
be able to find their way back before losing interest. I suspect we could
mitigate this concern by having the link open a new tab (or new window,
depending on browser preferences). Other possibilities include adding a subtle
↗️ icon beside the link or creating a simple landing page here on the site that
takes you to the supporting site.
