Hey Sebastian, As an old guy who has negotiated a few raises in my time, here are my thoughts.
I think the 70-100k range for Senior Ruby Dev seems reasonable, but there is definitely a huge range of 'Senior' developers out there. I know of Ruby developers at the lower end of your range and also guys that earn significantly more than 100k at a full-time gig. Salaries depend a lot on the company who is signing the cheque. Programmers will usually take a bit less cash to work for a cool company on a cool project. Most companies using Rails aren't your typical corporate hell-holes from what I can see. Despite what you say, I think the city you are living in is a factor. I live in Melbourne and I know that guys working in Sydney generally get paid a bit more. They also have higher living costs, so I can't hold a grudge. When working out a fair rate a company would look a company would try to guess what it would cost to replace you, and that would generally mean hiring another local. When deciding if you yourself are getting a fair deal, you would have to find out what other employers would be willing to pay. If you don't mind moving states for a better paycheck, that is your choice, but many people wouldn't want that hassle. If you are a single and mobile guy, then maybe better salaries in other cities might be tempting. Also, I think your current salary is also a factor. If you are on $50k now (for example), I would be astonished if you got a bump to $100k unless you are seriously undervalued at the moment. A 20-30% bump for a promotion would be more normal - much more than a standard pay review. All of this of course depends on how much you have been wowing your bosses lately. I'm sure some other guys will have some opinions on this.
