Few employers can put a dollar value on a single developers contribution to
company revenue.

Even if you were making trainers in a Nike shoe factory, where your daily
output could be measured precisely, your pay would still be limited by what
it would cost for your employer to replace you. Your employer may consider
the marketing and sales of the product to be much more valuable than the
creation of it and so be biased that way.

There are no hard and fast rules for negotiating pay. I think it often has a
lot to do with perceptions, emotions and things that don't necessarily
relate to your performance.
