I agree that RVM is a godsend for development, and a pain in production. 

We configure production environments using binary packages of Ruby where 
possible, or manually compile if the packages are considered too old.

Perhaps RVM would shine in a production environment hosting many different Ruby 
apps. Our production environments are dedicated to single apps.
