I agree with Pat — finding something in your project work that could be extracted out as a reusable library will probably lead to a much more useful gem. Motivation is a big deal when working on open source projects. If the idea and requirements aren't your own, if you're not filling a need you have, there's a pretty big chance you'll run out of fuel.
