ISRAELI VICTIMS
The Israeli public was relieved to learn late yesterday that most of their
missing countrymen have now been located alive around New York City.
However, dozens of others have still not been in contact with loved ones
here, and authorities say at least three Israelis, and possibly as many as
twenty, are believed to be buried in the rubble of the destroyed World Trade
Center. Nearly 1,000 Israelis had been reported missing in the agonizing
hours after the twin towers came crashing to he ground, and fears grew that
many of them may have been in or near the area where the world's worst
terrorist attack took place Tuesday morning. At least twenty Israelis were
wounded in the attack. A well-known Israeli businessman was among the many
passengers slain when their planes were deliberately steered by terrorist
hijackers into the famous towers. The victim, Daniel Levin, was the
founder of the hi tech Akamai company.
Despite relief that most potential Israeli victims are all right, the Jewish
State remains in deep mourning for the thousands of people--many of them
Jews--whose lives were demonically snuffed out in what President George Bush
has appropriately called an act of war. The enormity of the attacks on New
York and Washington is still sinking in, as is surely the case all around
the world. Frequently televised pictures from the scene of the Manhattan
carnage have been likened to parts of Europe at the end of World War Two.
It has been difficult for me personally to watch news reports from the scene
since a red brick apartment building, located just a few short blocks north
of the destroyed towers, has often been shown. It is a building I have
stayed in several times while visiting the city. I often stood outside on
my friend's balcony, gazing south toward the giant World Trade buildings and
others around them. Now the breathtaking scene has been horribly altered to
that of a war zone.
OKLAHOMA CITY AND FLIGHT 800
Several friends have written to remind me of statements I made over the past
few years, warning that Saddam Hussein was plotting an attack on the
southern half of Manhattan. I had based this on an assessment shared with
me by an FBI agent in early 1995. He had worked on a break-in that occurred
at a home that I was staying in outside of Washington DC--a crime that had
suspected links to white supremacist groups operating with possible Mideast
backing. Some of you will recall that I was taken off of a couple flights
that winter because the FBI had intelligence information that a Mideast
concern, suspected to be Saddam Hussein, was plotting to bring down an
American airliner with a missile (my airline tickets had apparently been
examined by the intruders, since I found them on top of my bed instead of
inside my bag where I had left them before going out for dinner with my
host).
I was told that authorities possessed evidence that the Iraqi dictator was
also planning to sponsor a major attack on a US government building, and
another on LOWER MANHATTAN in an attempt to cause serious damage to the US
economy. I shared this information in many places, including during a radio
interview in Dallas in late March. I later found out that the program was
simulcast in Oklahoma City--where an insidious terror attack brought down
the Murrah federal building less than one month later. In light of what I
had been told, I have always suspected that convicted terrorist Timothy
McVay may well have had Mideast funding for his crime, even if he himself
may not have been aware of it (being but the final link in a shrouded
chain), although this has obviously never been officially established.
I am even more convinced that a missile did indeed bring down an American
airplane when TWA flight 800 crashed off of Long Island. Too many people,
including acquaintances of mine, saw what they were certain was a projectile
heading up toward the jet before it blew up and fell into the ocean.
Subsequent government attempts to blame the disaster on fumes in one of the
plane's fuel tanks have always seemed extremely dubious to me. For one
thing, Israeli intelligence had warned their American counterparts just a
few weeks before that Saddam was plotting to take out a US aircraft (El Al
flight times out of New York had been altered as a result of the
information). The "accident" took place just hours after the Iraqi dictator
delivered a speech warning that he would take revenge on America for his
humiliating defeat in the Gulf War.
I shared with many in early 2000 my suspicions that Arab attempts that year
to carry out New Year's terror attacks around Seattle and somewhere in the
Northeast were also probably linked to Saddam, although the shadowy group
headed by Osama Bin Laden was actually fingered for them. Some of you who
heard me speak that winter may recall that I also said, as I had in 1995,
that one of the intended targets was probably somewhere in Manhattan. I
suspected this was linked to the earlier information I had received that a
massive attack was seemingly being planned to strike at the heart of the
financial district, with the hope of causing severe damage to the American
economy, along with killing and wounding many victims on the scene. I also
shared that I was told that authorities feared such an attack could come in
the form of a small nuclear device (a number of Soviet-made suitcase bombs
were earlier reported missing by Russian officials).
Now we are hearing that this week's terrorist assaults upon America may have
involved up to 50 people. At least 10 terrorists took part in the actual
attacks--apparently "offering up their lives" as martyrs for the Islamic
cause. That sort of number points strongly to state sponsorship, say many
Israeli analysts.
SADDAM'S REVENGE?
Several analysts are slowly coming to the conclusion that Saddam Hussein was
probably behind the New York and Washington attacks. I tend to agree with
that assessment. The strong suspicions are buttressed by the brutal
dictators scathing words against the United States this week which attempted
to justify the horrendous massacres. "The US is harvesting the thorns it
has planted around the world," he maintained, adding that "America has been
exporting evil, thinking that only its people's lives are dear to them."
Reports that one of the suspected Arab hijackers had taken part in a
Palestinian terrorist attack upon an Israeli bus five years ago have only
strengthened that assessment, since Saddam strongly backs the Palestinian
cause.
Even if some of the suspected hijackers were Saudi citizens, as media
reports indicate, this does not preclude sponsorship by Saddam. It is true
that the Iraqi leader is considered a threat by the pro-western Saudi
regime. But it must be recalled that Bin Laden himself is of Saudi origin,
and has successfully recruited many of his countrymen (along with Muslim
extremists from many other Islamic countries) to carry out various
anti-American terrorist assaults.
I have always suspected that Bill Clinton decided not to pursue the
substantial evidence linking the TWA explosion to Saddam because he did not
want a bothersome war to interfere with elections being held that year.
Indeed, shooting down an airplane full of civilian passengers is an act of
war. So the "fumes" theory was adopted and promoted, despite substantial
evidence suggesting a more insidious cause.
One can only hope that George Bush will carry out his pledge to find out
exactly who was behind this week's hellish attacks--not just who actually
carried them out--and go after them, even if that means another major war
with Iraq and/or other regional countries. Appeasement only leads to
disaster, as we should have all learned from World War Two. The only way to
prevent further atrocities is to meet the terrorist's thunderous
"declaration of war" with the same.
