We've always collected dues, 50 cents a week or $2 a month. The money gets
used for supplies like handbooks, patches, craft materials, and camping
equipment. Our outpost does not receive any money from the church budget so
we rely solely on dues and donations. I've never seen anything wrong with
collecting dues. In fact, when we go on an outing, we usually ask the boys
to bring a buck or three to help cover the costs of things like food and
campsite fees. The trick is to be reasonable: say $1 for a day fishing
trip, $3 for an overnite campout, and $5 for longer outings.

The payoff is that the boys don't have to pay any major expenses and that
makes the parents happy. We supply our boys with uniforms instead of having
them buy their own. Last time I checked, a complete uniform was around 60
bucks. We also pay chartering and Pow Wow registration fees, which for some
reason, go up every year...

I also give the boys incentives to bring dues. I have a system in which the
boys earn point for bringing dues. They get points for lots of other stuff
like attending Sunday School and church, or bringing a new boy to the
meeting. At the end of each quarter, the boy with the most points gets a
prize. At the end of the year, the grand prize winner gets a ranger t-shirt
or cap or somoething like that.

Oh, one more thing and then I'll sit down. If you haven't done so already,
contact Mark Jones on RangerNet. He's got a Ranger Records computer program
thats the greatest thing since propane stoves!

Just curious how many outpost use a dues system and or do you see this as a
conflict in ministry since rangers is not really a "club"?

Thanks,
