In the news today.. a mall "Santa" took enough guff from a 9 year old and pushed him into a broom closet in his "north pole" facility and closed the door on him, to 'teach him a *lesson.. Santa is awaiting charges... Last night at the Troop meeting the Scoutmaster had all the boys above 1st class go out in the hall for a lecture about meeting planning and general pep talk about their jobs as leaders.. All the boys under 1st class stayed in the gym with "former RR Cdr.->A No.1<-" and our task was to work on common scout skills on the trail to 1st class... and that ment- *Knotcraft<G> (Knot tying is Rangernet secret code for what Commander does if he don't have a plan for the meeting<G>) Shortly, I "assumed" Command and began my chat/demonstration with all boy-adult leaders (*headbangers) absent.. and a feeling came on me that I was dead meat before the hungry lions! I was pumping out good stuff about stopper knots, and a few of the boys were masterfully turning that into outbursts of impolite bathroom humor... I moved to the square knot and talked about how it can fail under load if not cared for.. The boys began to play with their short ropes, useing them to whipp each other or began to tie the Hangman's knoose.. *Noteing that.. I stopped my excellent lecture to brief the boys on why the hangmans knoose is as it is.. How it snaps the neck of the evil doer by his own falling weight.. and that such justice is still the Law (*Hanging till dead) in our fair State. In fact.. right in our town.. a Murder occured involveing two brothers and the perp was caught,convicted and choose hanging by the neck! *Even this intresting teachible moment didn't stop the wrestlessness and one on one rope games in the group of 25 boys age 10-13.. I stoped.. took the one rope in question away from two scouts by a sharp.. *RELEASE! I explained, that sometimes with mentaly ill people and those with brain injuries that some get locked in cycles and only a sharp change of direction can un-lock their reasoning.. *Blank looks.. "It's a groovy joke guys.." Suddenly the group was on me! "Groovy-GROOVY! What are you some 60's guy!!!" (I began my slow melt-down into a Santa moment) We moved on quickly to page two of the knot handout that I had developed from internet resources and printed out as a handout for reference. (see section 5 of RR-LTC) Page two had pictures of creative lashing projects.. I tried to create a "safe harbor" of "reflection" and encourage discussion (*also sec.5 RR-ltc) but several caught on that one of the lashing projects was a Latrine.. That got them wound up over bathroom humor again, latrine ethics and how to take a "dump" in the woods..<G> *Again I headed off the rush to melt-down by opening a discussion of World-geo knoledge that *most of the world squats... and only eats beans-rice and bread. We ended that discussion as fast as possible by me laying a few tips about if you squat.. watch where your boots are, and what plant you use to.... errrr...<G> The clock said I was allmost home free, so we tried to bring it back to an open discussion about "playing the game" called Troop 328.. The boys took this time to tear up the handouts and generaly ignore opportunity to get hip fast<G> *I thanked them for the brief time of my return to duty as a Commander.. and that they could talk to me at any time, I would be availible as allways in the sidelines, standing quietly<G> "Let's play a game.. let's play tag!" They yelled!<G> (Please God.. rapture me now) *I escaped... and only tossed and turned in my sleep for three hours last night<G> WHAT -=A=- Learned... -------------------- *When yur HOT yur hot.. *When yur not, yur knot!
