I have a former commnander friend who is a chemist. This is what he said:
Janet
 Hello,

I think the chemical is called Phenolpthalein, (I think), But I think it is
not available in stores any more, and it is a chemical indicator. But I
thinkmyou can use the coloring from red cabbage, cook some and strain it.
then dilute this in either a solution with either baking soda or vinegar I
forget, (Vinegar is acidic, and Baking soda is basic).

Sorry I cant be more clear, but the Boy Scout Chemistry Merit zBadge book is
the reference, and it has been a year since I read it.
