Last week, the younger scouts suffered me trying to lecture on knotcraft, got the best of me and over ran me with their "charm";') In a mid-week meeting PLC- (*patrol leader council)......... I de-briefed to SPL (RR Sr.Guide equalivilant) and he suggested changes.. SPL and his "staff" were out of the room and involved in something akin to "Training the trainer" instruction, during that past meeting and for one more week.. *That meeting was last night- the following is a "report"<G> 12-10 7pm. Following opening.. The troop split into two groups of Scouts above 1st class and 1st class and below with -=A=- I had brought a TV/VCR combo player and three 30 min. video's of the show "Trailside" on rock climbing, cave exploreing, and Mt. Bikeing.. "Ok Mr.Wheeler- you have them for 10 min's and then we'll combine again.." I ambled up and spoke- "Howdy Boys, SPL wanted you to see these high adventure instructional videos to prepare you for comming Troop adventures.." (*PUSH FWD) ..gonk-click...whirrlll---- ...and with the lighting subdued, the boys FELL INTO A TRANCE! 10 min's went by- *No Sweat! ..but also no returning troop! 20 mins went by- *Still working! 30 min's- *Changed tape<G> *Back to trance! 60 mins- *Last tape! Glad I had three! About this time I started to get hassled by other Adults about just showing video's.. I replied that I had cleared it with SPL and it was his idea.. it was working, and the boys were acking intersted.. *They pushed me with their agenda, so I went to check with leadership, when the troop would end their cycle and return.. They were overdue. On "MY" return.. the Adults had shut off the video and were lectureing the boys about advancement and a lesson on knotcraft again..<G> (overheard as I stand there brain nutral<G>) OK- LISTEN-UP! This could be important one day.. Hey-hey.. Listen up now.. this may be all you remember about Scouts- OK now.. the rabbit comes up and goes down around the- Hey KNOCK IT OFF! OK.. now the Double Bowline is what we used to have to know.. (5 mins of fumbleing) Ok forget that.. here's one we never needed to know! (fumble-fumble-mumble-mumble) *I know it don't make sence, but one day when you have to do it by yourself and be judged on it, you will thank me for showing this to you and then you can show someone else and...boys-Boys-BOYS! HEY!hey!hey! DIDN'T I SAY KNOCK IT OFF? (*wow.. so much betteh than the video ;') On the other side of the room's wall- SPL reported to me this time<G> "It's seemes Mr.Apling who is a teacher, is useing the NTC style of negitive training to try to spark some life in us to provide better instruction. He has us in "round-robin" groups visiting stations where we do hands on learning, but his lecture style has an "edge" to it... We kind of feel he is showing off his "education" and useing Teacher lingo-<G>" Last week he just plain bored us to death with lecture style instruction... this week he said he did it that way for a "lesson for us to learn" but all I know is that everyone is upset.. bummed out or ticked off.. "Huh!.." said -=A=-<G> "I wonder what all this has to do with the virtures of Boy leadership?" quipped SPL..
