Tolkein, author of Lord of the Ring was a deep abiding Christian. He wrote of forbidden subjects in fantasy form much as his friend, C. S. Lewis, whom he led to the Lord. In the days it was written, the words sorcerer and elves, etc were just fantasy words. It was many years later before people took those things seriously, and so it is unfortunate that people judge by the words. Such as "Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis is also a story of redemption and forgiveness and love, but the word, witch keeps Christians from reading it. She was not really a witch, she was the ice queen who froze those into statues who did not do her bidding. She ruled with the spirit of fear. But, on the other hand, the word witch is the reason why this wonderful book is still in the public schools. Go figure. I went with my husband and family to see the film yesterday and it was fantastic. If you look at the story from the point of view that this is a story of redemption, you will see the monsters, demons, evil warriors, etc as the representatives of the devil. There is the breastplate of righteousness represented very nicely, and there are temptations and depression etc that all Christians face. There are places of respite like we find in prayer and turning points of decision. I do not recommend it for small children, it is very intense. The difference between the two movies is simple: One makes witchcraft and dark powers look enticing and fun and it has no redeeming virtue. The other is the war between good and evil and it is very much pro good and anti evil. Just my opinion. Janet _______ This mailing list is dedicated to the glory of God.
