You could always read the books <g>. On the other hand, you may wish to see
the film first as it lost some of its impact on me because I knew what was
coming (I re-read the books this year). It is like Janet said, it is
basically a good vs. evil plot but it uses a lot of mythology for its
creatures (then again what were the Anakim and the Rephaim!). Tolkein was a
Christian and a friend/colleague of C. S. Lewis. Not sure how Lewis was
instrumental in bringing Lewis to the Lord unless it was by constant debate
as Lewis "thought" himself into the kingdom. Firstly, he accepted that there
was a god and then studied religion to decide which was true. If you want to
know the full story you can read his autobiography, "Surprised by Joy".
