I've got a couple of questions on this string.

The $100.00, does it go to one Ranger only? The reason I ask. I understand that you are trying to motivate all the Rangers in your outpost, but what if one excels and shines above the rest? What effect will that have on the others? Under normal circumstances it will un-motivate the others and the goal of motivating "all" will fail. I say this because I have seen it happen. The desired goal of motivating all gets lost as the others get left in the wake of the one motivated boy.

Second question. Since you work with Pioneers, why all the emphasis on merits? What about the rest of their advancements?

Just my thoughts and questions - love ya all,

I'm not saying the ends justify the means.  Or the means justify the end.  The point is that simply, the merits are getting done.  The boys are doing what they want.

One commander suggested everyone who earns a merit could go out paint balling.  That is bribery for the whole group.

Healthy competition if good for the group.  And if all the boys in the outpost have a chest full of ribbons, how is that going to look to the boys who come in after.  It will make them want to go out and receive awards so they can get more then the kid who already has more then someone else.  Everyone wants to be the best and have all the other boys look up to them.

Healthy competition is good.  What would the point of the Olympics be if there was NO gold medal?  What would be the point of the Nobel Academy if there were no prizes in medicine, physics, or peace to award?  What would be the point of going to school and graduating if there was no diploma, or valedictorian?  What would be the point of all the work and effort of Royal Rangers Advancements if there was no Gold Medal?

There would be no point.  There would be no competition to see who could get it.  There would be no competition to see who could get across the finish line first.  There would be no competition spurring us along.

I'm sure there will be people saying "the point of Royal Rangers is to REACH, TEACH, and KEEP boys for Christ."  That is true, but that is the responsibility of the commanders to REACH and TEACH.  Once the boy is taught he can KEEP himself.  Even as they are trying their hardest to achieve their awards, they are learning.  It our job to REACH and TEACH.  It is the boys own job to KEEP himself for Christ

Noel - This message goes to you personally.  Do what you need to do.  If you feel this is the right thing to do, then do it.  I hope you prayed about this decision, and if you did not this time, then next time be sure to pray long and hard.  If you did, and this is what God said to do then it will be blessed.  Not only will the idea, and the boy who receives the money be blessed, but you will for following God's command.  No matter what anyone tells you right now, FOLLOW THROUGH.  Your word is your honor.  If you say you will do something, do it.  Because if a man cannot be trusted at his word, he is no man at all.
