Wow! What an outing, I'm sorry I missed it. This is one of those that you will never forget. What would you do, is a big question. Of course we would all like to think that we could act quickly and decisively on the spur of the moment, right? That's what we as Royal Rangers Commanders do isn't it? But by asking what would you do gives us a chance to review the story and second guess our decisions.
I guess what I'm saying is, this is where the Royal Ranger Code comes into play on the leaders level. Alert - Mentality - Unique personalities huh? Maybe we should have divided those personalities amongst the rest of the Outpost. To level the field or remove the lumps so to speak. Boys seem to learn better from watching and doing from other boys. Physically - Boy leadership is right on track, Show me an Outpost that uses it's boys and I'll show you an Outpost on the move. But the term unique tends to haunt me. If you knew they were a breed of that nature maybe a close watch of Senior Guide or Lt. Commander just to distill, not interfere, until they get over their head. Remember the best way to learn sometimes is to fail. How many times have you done something and it went wrong? The reaction to that is usually, I'll remember what I did wrong the next time I try this. Spiritually - When something like that happens my first reaction is to go nuke! But because of the Power of the Holy Spirit that dwells in me (Bless his Holy Name). I can take a breath sit the boys down, order a few minute of silence. Listen with my Spiritual ears then proceed with a review of maybe Camp Safety. You may even have this patrol help teach Camp Safety to the Outpost using the blunders of this camp as an example of what not to do. Don't embarrass them or shame them but learn from their mistakes as well as you own. Above all be honest with yourself, the boys, and other Commanders in your Outpost debrief about the incident find what went wrong, when it went wrong, why it went wrong, and how to correct it. We can only improve if we look inward.
